Mixed Tournament: Round 1 Match 1 - Andreas vs Nai

Welcome to our newest MMA tournament. I am Mr. Jack with Califlower Calhoun. We are your announcers for the Mixed MA tournament. Today in the first round we have Andreas vs Nai.

Turn 1: Andreas moves to the center of the Octagon
Nai moves to the center and attacks head on. Andreas is forced back 1 zone with a kick to the chest. 2 points of damage to chest, it is now 3.

Califlower: Wow! here folks you see the quick striking style of Muay Thai. Andreas is hurt, stumbling away from Nai

Turn 2: Andreas moves back into the center zone. Andreas manveuvers to gain the advantage but is unsuccessful in his attack both NPMA remain in the zone.
Nai attempts a takedown and locks Andreas up in a standing hold.

Mr. Jack: Nai again showing good mix of skills turn Andreas strike against him by grabbing his arm. He doesn't have the arm bar yet but he is applying pressure and working Andreas around the center to get the leaverage he needs.

Turn 3: Nai tries for a submission but Andreas hold him off. Andreas attempts to escape from lockup. He is successful and moves 1 zone away.
Andreas charges back into the center of the Octagon. Nai out maneuvers him and tries for a choke hold. (Andreas has success on 6 of his 6 dice while Nai has success on 6 of his 8 dice). Andrea fights off the choke hold.

Califlower: Andreas is showing the movement style that is Prankration. He is still aggressive and attacking. This is a great match!

Mr. Jack: That escape from the choke hold was critical. Nai would have able to physically punish or go for the submission if he had been able to apply the choke.

Turn 4: Nai tries for lockup and catches Andreas in a standing clinch.
Andreas tries to escape from lockup. He is successful and moves 1 zone away.

Mr. Jack: Andreas is spending a lot of energy on the defensive. He needs to start getting strikes of his own.

Califlower: You can see both fighters are tiring.

Turn 5: Andreas tries a flying kick but Nai blocks it returning Andreas back to his zone.
Nai catches his breathe.

Califlower: Andreas leaps attempting a double handed over head smash. That is a desperation move by Andreas. He is tired and is trying to use his skill in striking to end this match in a single blow.

Mr. Jack: Nai blockes the attack pushing Andreas back. Nai doesn't follow up the attack but catches his breathe.

Turn 6: Andreas tries a flying kick again!

Mr. Jack: I can see the desperation in Andreas' eyes.

 Nai sidesteps as Andreas flies through to the opposite zone. Nai does a round kick to Andreas' head.
KNOCK OUT!

Califlower: And Nai times it perfectly. Andreas' attack left him open for the counter strike and Nai lands his perfectly!

Mixed Martial Arts Tournament - This one has it all!!!

This is the third MMA Tournament I am running. The first focused on the art of Striking within MMA. This Tournament will be focused on the art of Grappling. This Tournament will combine the two into one. Here is the real test to see if I created a cohesive set of rules.

MMA Grappling Championships: Juliana vs Boris

 Turn 1: Juliana moves to the center of the Octagon.
Boris moves to the center and attempts to lockup Juliana but she reverses the hold. Boris isn't knocked down because he is hard as nails.

Turn 2: Juliana attempts submission hold. She is successful reducing Boris' strength by 2.
Boris attempts to escape from the submission hold. He passes 1d6 then passes 1d6 again

Juliana is our MMA Grappling Tournament Winner.

Game Notes: I was really pleased with the final two NPMAs. One was heavy on Stats and Bonus Dice and the other was the lowest level of stats but had good signatures. This match was quick, not because of unbalanced NPMA contest, it was bonus dice useage. When I rolled Juliana's Bonus Dice for the Attempt for Submission Table I rolled 20 dice and the result was to use 7 Bonus Dice. Even though Boris was using 4 Bonus Dice himself, the additional dice was too much. Juliana had way more than 3+ successes so Boris had to Pass 2d6 against a value of 2 instead of his strength of 4.

I am very pleased with this section. Now I need to see how both the Striker and Grappling rules play together. I guess that means I will have to do a true MIXED tournament.

Second Round: Boris vs Chin

 Turn 1: Boris moves the center of the Octagon
Chin moves into the center of the Octagon and attempts a takedown. He locks up Boris but Boris is hard as nails and isn't knocked down. Boris is catch in a standing lockup

 Turn 2: Boris attempts to escape from lockup but fails.
Chin attempts a submission hold but Boris reverses the hold. He now has Chin in a standing lock up.

Turn 3: Chin escapes form the lock up and moves away
Boris moves toward Chin attempting a lockup but can't find an opening.

Turn 4: Chin attempts a lockup but Boris reverses the move gaining a lockup. Chin is hard as nails refusing to be knocked down.

Boris attempt the rear neck crank submission hold. He is successful reducing Chin's strength by 1.

Chin attempts to escape from submission with a strenght of 3. He passes 1d6, then 1d6 again.

Second Round - Juliana and Fumiaki

 Turn 1: Fumiaki tries for takedown but can't find an opening.

Mr. Jack: Welcome back fans. We are in second round of our tournament.

Califlower Calihoun: It is going to be a great technical match tonight. We have our two best grapplers in the ring. The savvy and grappling skill in the ring can't be surpassed and they are a perfect match. Juliana is faster and slighting stronger but Fumiaki isn't as slow in the stand up game Juliana is. He also has a rage within him that could give hime the edge.

 Turn 2: Juliana tries for a takedown. Fumiaki is knocked down to the ground and is locked up.

Califlower Calihoun: Juliana is quick to get her opponent on his back and she slipped his guard to gain the top position

Fumiaki attempts to escape from lockup. Juliana is slow to react. Fumiaki escapes from the lockup and moves 1 zone away and stands up.

Califlower: There is where we see Juliana's reaction time factoring in. Fumiaki was reacted quicker to the situation and freed himself.

Turn 3: Julian moves into the zone with Fumiaki. Juliana attepts the lockup and can't find an opening.
Fumiaki attempts a lockup. Juliana reverses the hold achieving lockup with a standing hold. Her speed the difference in who achieved the hold first.

Mr. Jack: Wow, Juliana speed in the ground game is amazing. Fumiaki was the aggressor but in a blink of an eyelash Juliana had him locked up.

 Turn 4: Julian attempts a submission hold. She achieves a rear choke hold reducing Fumiaki's strength to 3 for the escape from submission test.
Fumiaki attempts to escape from submisson. Fumiaki escapes the hold hurting his chest in the process. His chest strength is reduced to 3.
Fumiaki attempts to escape the lockup. Fumiaki escapes from lockup moving 1 zone away.

Califlower Calihoun: Again Juliana's slowness to react has allowed Fumiaki to escape again but it looked like it came at a high price.

 Fumiaki moves towards Juliana attempting lockup but can't find an opening.

Mr. Jack: Bravo, I love it when they are afraid to take the offensive. No running around the Octagon for Fumiaki. He is not giving an inch.

 Turn 5: Juliana attempts lockup but can't find an opening.
Fumiaki tries for a lockup but can't find an opening.

Turn 6: Fumiaki attempts lockup but Juliana knocks Fumiaki down and locks him up.
Juliana tries for a submission. Juliana applies a leg lock which reduces Fumiaki strength by 1 for the escape from submission test.
Fumiaki attempts to Escape from Submission (Passing 2d6 against strength 3 is the setup)
Fumiaki escapes from the submission. He hurts his head in the escape.
Fumiaki attempts to escape lockup but can't escape. He is still locked up and knocked down.

Califlower Calhoun: Fumiaki keeps escaping Juliana but it is taking a toll. His strength is waning. He needs to figure out how to get past her blinding speed or she will outlast him.

 Turn 7: Fumiaki attempts to escape lockup but can't. He is still locked up.
Juliana attempts a submission hold. Juliana gets him is a arm triangle choke hold reducing his strength by 2. Fumiaki's strength is now 1 for the escape from submission test.
Fumiaki attemps to escape from submission (Passed 0d6 - rolled 2,2).

Game Notes: I am really please with this match. I wanted grappling to last a little longer than striking but I didn't want it to take forever. I was concerned that limiting the Strength reduction to 1 point would make it last too long.

It really didn't because of the ability to temporary lower the defender's strength for the escape submission test. Fumiaki started with an average of 4 strength. His strength was temporarily lowered by 2 and 1 then he lowered his strength for the match strength in the chest and head by 1.

So he went 4 then 4 (3.7 rounded up) then 3 ( 3.3 rounded down) for his overall strength. Combined with the temp strength lowering the Attempt for Submission Table provided this worked very well.

Chin vs Abdullah

Welcome to our final match of the first round of our MMA grappling tournament. This is the clinch and ground work game at its best. No stiking allowed. With me today is 'Califlower' Callihoun, champion Shoot Wrestler.

Thanks Mr. Jack, We have a great match for our audience today. It is African Freestyle Wrestler Abdullah versus Aikido Master Chin.

The two face off and move toward the middle of the Octagon where the referee is waiting.

Turn 1: Abdullah attempts a lockup but Chin reverses the hold, locks up Abdullah knocking him to the ground.

We are to a fantastic start. That hip throw that Chin used brought Abdullah down hard. Chin has the advantage lets see what he can do with it.

Turn 2: Chin attempts a submission hold. Abdullah reverses the situation locking up Chin. Chin would have been knocked down if he wasn't hard as nails.

The sweep by Abdullah was fantastic. Chin is hard as nails and equally tough to bring down but while Abdullah was unsuccessful to bring him down he still has position and the advantage with the lock up in the Clinch,

Abdullah stands up and attempts a submission but is unable to find a hold. Chin is knocked down and still locked up.

Abdullah keeps the arm locked as he stand up. He tries to apply a standing arm bar but Chin keeps position and prevents it. Abdullah does knock Chin down so the has top position now.

Turn 3: Abdullah attempts a submission successfully applying a leg lock (-2 to Chin strength). Chin rolls for escape from submission (2d6 against Str of 2) PASSED 2d6! Chin escapes the leg lock. (Abdullah attempts to apply 1 point of damage to Chin's strength, rolled Arm so no damage applied.) Chin attempts to escape from lockup. He succeeds moving 1 zone away and stands up.

WOW! what a fantastic leg lock. Chin is in pain and he is completely out of position. Abdullah has all the leverage. Mr. Jack it will be only moments now. Lets watch closely to see Chin tap.

OH MY Gawd! 'Califlower' I can't believe it Chin is slowly moving Abdullah's lock. He is reaching for Abdullah's arm.

He has it! He has IT! You were right Mr. Jack. Chin has freed himself from the leg lock. He does it with grit and determination!

Chin has escaped from the leg lock now he is escaping from the lower position. He is crawling away and he has stood up! That is amazing! He looked done and now he has completely reset the match.

Chin moves toward Abdullah attempts to lockup and is successful knocking him to the ground.

Chin doesn't run away either. He charges right back into a standing clinch with Abdullah. He sweeps Abdullah to the ground and moves to the mount to lock Abdullah up.

Turn 4: Abdullah attempts to escape lockup but fails. He is still locked up.

Chin attempts a submission hold. An arm lock is applied. Abdullah attempts to escape from the submission. (Passing 2d6 vs Strength of 4, 0d6 passed). TAP OUT!

Abdullah is trying to sweep Chin into the guard but Chin moves quickly to the side mount. He has the arm lock applied. The submission hold is too much for Abdullah. He taps out!

Wow! what a great match!

I really enjoyed the way the charts moved the flow of the grappling back and forth. It was really exciting to get my first MMA to escape from submission especially when it has a -2 factor applied to Strength for the passing of dice.

I am still not sure if I like the term of Standing to represent the top position in grappling. It doesn't give the feel of both MMA on the ground grappling but it is much easier to represent with miniatures and know who receives a -1d6 and who doesn't.
